The City Night Views

Nagasaki City has a unique “bowl-shaped” topography centered around Nagasaki Port. Nagasaki city has always been known as the “City of Slopes” because there is very little flat land. This unique topography, we were able to enjoy beautiful night views from almost anywhere in the city.

Taking advantage of this feature, Nagasaki have been working to improve aspects such as lighting in recent years.

This initiative aims to gradually illuminate areas that were previously dimly lit, and as a result, the narrow stairways and slopes of Nagasaki—where the ground used to be dark—are gradually becoming brighter. And so has come to play an important role in crime prevention as well. Therefore, the lights sparkling along the mountainside are not artificial lights, but rather the natural lights of everyday life.

As a result, it was designated as one of the “World’s New Three Great Night View Cities” in 2012 and 2022.
